Japan gives $378m subsidy to Sony image sensor fab

Sony has been granted subsidies worth $378 million to add production capacity, reports the Nikkei.

The money will be spent on  an image sensor plant being built  in Kumamoto prefecture (pictured).

At the weekend, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said it had approved the Sony’s  plan under Japan’s Economic Security Promotion Act.

“We expect this to ensure a stable supply of image sensors, which will be key devices in the age of artificial intelligence,” said Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa.

Sony iis investing $1.14 billion in the fab which is being equipped , initially,  to run 10k 300mm wpm with first silicon   in May 2029.
