Bungie Kept Most Destiny 2 Devs in the Dark About Sunsetting While Moving Resources to Marathon

Meanwhile, leading up to and following the announcement, Bungie has been Destiny 2 team members over to Marathon, its latest large-scale game—a game that appears to not have had quite the commercial success Sony and Bungie were hoping for, despite an estimated 1.2 million sales, as the developer scrambles to add features to address player concerns. The report also claims that Sony is supporting Marathon with more resources following the Destiny 2 announcement and that there is no expectation for Marathon to become the next big live-service hit that would replace Destiny as a revenue stream, although there is an expectation that upcoming PvE and PvP updates will grow the game’s player base. Currently, there are still no other upcoming games in development at Bungie, at least none that have been rumored or announced, and it’s unclear if anything else will be green-lit while Marathon is this early in its live-service life cycle—numerous projects have been pitched by Bungie employees, including more Destiny games, but none have been pursued so far.
