Semtech connects with Z-Wave Alliance

The Alliance is the SDO (standards developing organisation) for smart home and IoT wireless comms using Z-Wave. The protocol is used primarily for elements of smart buildings. For example, lighting, thermostats, sensors and even smart door locks.

“Semtech’s vast experience in large-scale wireless deployments makes them an ideal partner for the Alliance as Z-Wave continues to expand beyond the boundaries of the smart home,” said Avi Rosenthal, Chair of the Board for the Z-Wave Alliance, right.

“Their participation reinforces our commitment to building an open, interoperable standard while giving the ecosystem greater flexibility, choice, and support for the next generation of IoT.”

Z-Wave Alliance Board of Director member companies include: ADT, Alarm.com, Assa Abloy, BlueConnect Partners, Fortune Brands, Johnson Controls, Nabu Casa, Silicon Labs, Trident IoT, and Vivint.

“Semtech joins the Z-Wave Alliance Board with a clear focus: advancing the next generation of smart, connected devices,” said its Senior Director of LoRa Ecosystem, and Semtech & LoRa Alliance Board Chair, Olivier Beaujard. “By combining our deep expertise in low-power, long-range connectivity with Z-Wave’s proven technology, we are ideally positioned to deliver multi-protocol chipset solutions that redefine what smart, connected devices can achieve.”

“This includes enabling the next generation of Edge AI sensors — from smart security to industrial and commercial IoT — with the long-range, low-power connectivity and data throughput they need to support richer capabilities like audio, video, and over-the-air updates, all with minimal power overhead. We look forward to building that future alongside the Alliance’s members”, stated Olivier Beaujard, Senior Director, LoRa Ecosystem, Semtech & LoRa Alliance Board Chair.”

Semtech is the organization’s third silicon provider. Z-Wave is primarily backed by Silicon Labs, having been acquired from Sigma Designs in 2018, and originally from Zensys in 2008.

It supports the low-latency transmission of small data packets at data rates of up to 100 kbit/s.
